January 2nd...1986 - Mike Bossy became the 11th NHL player to score 500 goals (and first to score 500 with Isles). He scored 500 in fewer games (647) than anyone in history at that time. Gretzky later did it in only 575 games. Goal #500 came in a 7-5 win over Boston.
1990 - St. Louis Blues rookie goaltender Curtis Joseph made his NHL debut in a 6-4 loss to the visiting Edmonton Oilers.
1992 - In the largest trade in NHL history, Calgary sent Doug Gilmour, Ric Nattress, Jamie Macoun, Rick Wamsley, and Kent Manderville to Toronto, in exchange for Gary Leeman, Michel Petit, Craig Berube, Jeff Reese, and Alexander Godynyuk.
1997 - Mark Messier scored twice to move past Guy Lafleur into 11th place on the NHL All Time goal-scoring list (with 561 goals), and added an assist, as the Rangers won 4-3 over the Islanders, at MSG.
