Why So Serious?

With the Academy Awards coming up, there's alot of buzz surrounding the late Heath Ledger's portrayal as The Joker in The Dark Knight. Many believe that he should be nominated and win for Best Supporting Actor. And it looks like you can count Atlanta Thrashers goalie Kari Lehtonen amongst those who think Ledger should win the Oscar.

That's because in practice Lehtonen has been showing off a brand new mask with a picture of Ledger as The Joker on the side, as seen above.

This isn't the first time that Lehtonen has put something pop culture related/nerdy on his mask. Previous themes included Transformers, Final Fantasy X, and Kill Bill.

I'm sure this will definitely sway Academy voters to vote for Ledger. Here's how I imagine that discussion might go.

Voter #1: I'm really not too sure about voting for Heath Ledger as The Joker. I think there are some other pretty good performances that are deserving too.
Voter #2: Yeah but Kari Lehtonen of the Atlanta Thrashers thinks he should win.

Voter #1: Well then! Give that man the Oscar!
Voter #2: Give it to his family or whomever is accepting it for him you mean.
Voter #1: Oh yeah...
*Awkward, sad silence*

Wyclef Jean In A Habs Jersey

This isn't especially news worthy, but I just always like seeing famous people who you don't think would care at all about hockey doing something hockey related. And this fits the bill perfectly.

I neither like Wyclef Jean or 60 Minutes, but apparently Sunday's edition of 60 Minutes had a feature on Wyclef Jean, and in one scene he was spotted rocking out in a Habs jersey. (As seen above.)

I tried to think of a clever headline for this post using one of Wyclef's songs and sneaking in the word Habs, but I'm really not that creative. The best I came up with was Habs Don't Lie, a take off on Hips Don't Lie. But that's actually a song by Shakira that Wyclef is only featured in. So that really put a damper on things. Except that I started to think about Shakira and then everything was all better again.

"Celebrities" Take In The Winter Classic

Sorry to beat some more coverage of the 2009 Winter Classic over your heads, but it's one of the only times that hockey gets any mainstream play so I figured I should cover it as best as possible. Or until I'm tired of writing about it.

Well it looks like old man winter wasn't the only big name in attendance at Sunday's Winter Classic. Get it? It was cold! Let's take a look at what other big stars (note the sarcasm) were in attendance.

John Hughes - Talking pictures director

Pat Sajak - Wheel of Fortune host/Heartthrob to old ladies everywhere

Actor Thorsten Kaye. What he's acted in I don't know. From the looks of the picture, something about lumberjacks.

Actress Joan Cusack and her family. What, John Cusack busy?

CSI star William Peterson

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan. The excitement in this photo is too much for me to handle. I think my computer screen might explode.

I don't really care about these celebrities but it's nice to see Vince Vaughn was able to take a break from making
crappy Christmas movies to attend. Hey remember when Vaughn used to be good? I miss that, probably so does his career.

Stars Meet A Star

Will Smith's latest movie Seven Pounds opened to mostly terrible reviews this weekend. But while the movie was doing bad things to moviegoers at the theatres, at least at the Dallas premiere they tried to make up for it and do some good.

At the premiere some of the guys from the Stars and the star of Seven Pounds Will Smith were on hand to raise money for the North Texas Food Bank. (Donations to the food bank can also be made
here)

And after all was said and done, they raised $4,000 for the non-profit food bank. Not bad but I mean come on. Will Smith or some of the Stars players couldn't have put in some dough for this? $4k is pocket change to these guys. More so for Smith, but I digress.

Later on in the event, Smith called up the Dallas Stars on stage and was presented with a Stars jersey! Which after the photo-op he will never ever wear again.

Here's video from the event...

Presidential Puck Drop?

The Winter Classic at Wrigley Field is exactly one month away from today. And as preparations are being made for the outdoor game at the home of the Chicago Cubs, it is the possible attendance of the next leader of the free world that is causing the most buzz.

According to a report in
The Hockey News, Blackhawks team president Jack McDonough is in talks with the Obama camp about having the President-elect attend. Obama is a proud Chicago native and has become something of a hero to the natives of the Windy City. So an appearance at Wrigley in front of his home town fans would be quite the occasion.

The day of the Winter Classic comes only 19 days before Obama's Inauguration Day, so the hope is that they'll be able to have the President-elect stop by before things really get busy.

This wouldn't be the first appearance by a political figure at a professional sporting event. As many
presidents have thrown out the first pitch at baseball games dating all the way back to 1910. And just recently, Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin took part in two separate puck drops.

Will Barack Obama say 'Yes he can' (pun intended) drop the puck before the Winter Classic? That remains to be seen as neither Obama nor his reps have commented. They apparently have other things to worry about like putting together a cabinet to save the economy from going into a depression. Putting the economy before a hockey game? For shame!

Jennifer Leaf Hewitt

It looks as if Leaf Nation can add a very famous and beautiful fan to it's ranks. Which is a big difference from their usual mouth breathing, band wagon jumping fans who only hang Leaf flags out of the windows of their Honda Civics when they're winning.

Celebrity gossip website TMZ had a story/video on their site about actress Jennifer Love Hewitt and how she was helping out the homeless during American Thanksgiving. They had some paparazzo follow Hewitt out to her car while she was unloading her bags and blah blah blah.

While I was watching the video, something seemed very familiar. At first I thought it was just because I see her image daily in my Jennifer Love Hewitt shrine that sits next to my bed. But that wasn't it. Then it donned on me. She's wearing a Toronto Maple Leafs hat!

Noooooooo!!!!!!

The sweet, beautiful, and talented Jennifer Love Hewitt is one of them? A member Leaf Nation? How could I have been so wrong? I guess that shrine to her is coming down.

In related news, is anybody looking for a lock of Jennifer Love Hewitt's hair? Because I won't be needing it anymore.

Barenaked Hockey Theme

The Hockey Theme, which used to have a home on Hockey Night in Canada but is now on TSN has received a remake courtesy of some ladies. Some Barenaked Ladies.

No this isn't a post about nude women making beautiful music. That's a different type of website.

This is instead about the Canadian band Barenaked Ladies, who have been tapped by CTV Globemedia (the company that owns TSN) to do a version of the iconic tune which is being described as "intricate and textured."

Barenaked Ladies drummer Tyler Stewart says he was excited to record a new version since he's a diehard hockey fan. He says it's also a thrill for the band because the song "means so much to so many people across the country."

The Barenaked Ladies version of The Hockey Theme is set to debut next month during televised games on TSN and RDS. No word yet on if the songs will take a traditional BNL tone and feature references to Kraft Dinner or looking for somebody to be your Yoko Ono.

Fin Gets Around

It looks like somebody forgot to feed Vancouver Canucks mascot Fin, as during Tuesday night's game he got hungry and tried to devour actress Anne Heche.

Sources say a crisis was diverted when Fin's handlers got his attention with some fish.
This isn't the first incident Fin has had with a famous actress. Around this time last year, he was spotted canoodling with Pam Anderson.

At least this time around Fin didn't contract an std.
